Tony Post

Happy Holidays!
Hello Friends, Well this is it?Rock Steady is out and we are so happy that we finally get to share it with all of you.
This year has been truly amazing for us.
After 15 years of being a band we are still having a great time making music together.
There have been so many highlights in 2001: recording in Jamaica, mixing in London, opening for U2?too many to list actually.
We just got back from NYC where we performed on Saturday Night Live this past weekend. That was our last performance of the year and we now get to enjoy a few weeks off before we head to Europe to do some TV shows and interviews in January.
We are really looking forward to touring the world in 2002 and performing the new songs for you.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this year happen for us and to everyone on the fan forum for the nice words about Rock Steady.
I wish you all happy holidays and a safe and peaceful new year.
Do well and doubt not.
See you soon.

No Doubt's Rock Steady Now Slated for Dec. 11 Release

November 27, 2001 – No Doubt have decided to release their new album, Rock Steady one week early. The collection, which was recorded with a variety of producers at a number of international locations, is now scheduled to arrive in record stores December 11, 2001.The release date has been pushed up in response to the overwhelming response that's greeted No Doubt's new single and video, "Hey Baby," including an impressive 130 first-week adds on Top-40 stations. Hailing from Orange County, California, No Doubt (Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal, Adrian Young) have recently been on tour in the US with labelmates U2, which has given the band the opportunity to perform music from Rock Steady live for the first time, including "Hey Baby" and "Hella Good."
Tony Kanal says of the shows: "It's been a great chance to try out some of our new songs. The U2 crowds have been really great to us every night."
No Doubt will be the musical guest on "Saturday Night Live" December 15. And they will be performing at the My VH1 Music Awards in Los Angeles December 2 and at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas December 4. The video for "Hey Baby," which was directed by Dave Meyers, is now in heavy rotation on MTV -- with 21 spins last week, "Hey Baby" was #10 on TRL Friday, November 23.The new album is named for one of the last songs to be included. Says Gwen Stefani, "Rock Steady is where we are as a band right now. Stay the course, keep focused. Like the song says, 'A real love survives, a rock steady vibe.' It could just as well be describing No Doubt, our band, after all these years."The producers who contributed to the new album are as follows: producer/remixer Nellee Hooper (U2, Bjork), ambient pioneer and dance remixer William Orbit (Madonna, Blur), former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek (Weezer, Guided By Voices), reggae's drum and bass duo Sly & Robbie, dancehall-reggae's dominant production team Steely & Clevie (Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest), up-and-coming hip-hop producers The Neptunes (Mystikal, Jay-Z) and inventive hip-hop producer Timbaland (Missy Elliot, Nas).Rock Steady was recorded in Los Angeles, Jamaica, and London. It incorporates dancehall-reggae, classic new wave, and R&B with the band's signature sound. It's No Doubt's fifth album, following their 1992 self-titled debut; The Beacon Street Collection (1995); the multi-platinum Tragic Kingdom (also 1995) and Return of Saturn (2000).Rock Steady track listing:Rock Steady (Intro)Hella GoodHey BabyMaking OutUnderneath It AllDetectiveDon't Let Me DownStart the FireRunningIn My HeadPlatinum Blonde LifeWaiting RoomRock SteadySOURCE NYROCK

Time of our lives!
Hey Lambs, It's me, G-loc here on a Saturday, doing overdubs in LA on our day off from the U2 tour.
I think we might just be having the time of our lives.
Not only did we have the best year ever making our new record, but we are also ending it on tour with a band that has been the soundtrack to our lives. All through our high school and college years, U2 had been there doing their thing. I have always respected and loved them but now with this touring experience it has gone to the next level.
These guys are the real deal. We stepped on stage for our first time in over a year opening for them at Madison Square Garden in NYC.
The show couldn't have been more intense.
The energy of the city coming together after the tragedies of September 11th was gorgeous.
I really felt lucky to be there with my best friends offering our music as a way to heal and distract from the confusion and pain of these times. Seeing U2 under normal circumstances is emotional enough, but with the combination of their music and a city in mourning, the words of the songs took on a whole new meaning. By the end of the concert everyone in the audience was in tears.
So much has happened since then. Tomorrow in Dallas will be our last show together.
We are all sad to have this magical time end. I don't think I would feel this motivated about touring right now if it wasn't for being out with U2.
Tell you more about it later.
Love, Gwen

People get readyWe're closing in on the end of the U2 tour, which is sad since we've had so much fun with those guys.
But in the next month we're going to be very busy getting ready for the release of the new album.
There are magazine interviews, photo shoots, television performances and all kinds of other stuff to keep us busy.
Don't worry though, early next year we'll begin touring and we'll go everywhere we can at least once.
So get ready! Tom[posted 11/20/2001 U.S.A.]

TomPost-Hello from Austin, Texas!

Hello from Austin, Texas!
We're having a blast on tour out here with U2, and it's so great to play for our fans again.
It's also great to read all of your discussions on the fan forum, there's nothing wrong with a little healthy debating and airing of opinions! Since Dancehall Reggae is still underground in the U.S., I thought it might be good provide you with some references if you want to find out more about it. "BIGGEST RAGGA DANCEHALL ANTHEMS 2001/2000/1999" are three fantastic compilations that will give you a great idea of what Dancehall is all about.
If you check these out on cdnow.com or amazon.com, you can listen to streaming clips of each track. These albums were spun to death backstage and in our cars last year during the ROS tour and have a lot to do with our approach to much of Rock Steady. New York and Hey Baby
We are in New York for a few days.
Today we play our first show of 2001 at MSG with U2, and we're so excited.
We rehearsed yesterday and did tons of interviews all day to be aired later on MTV and VH1. Also we had friends call us from home in LA to let us know that our new song "Hey Baby" is being played on the radio as of today.
It feels so good for us to have written and recorded this song at home as well as Jamaica and now we get to hear it on the radio! We're very proud.
The video is also almost finished and should be playing in a week or so on TV. See you all soon, -Tom and No Doubt[posted 10/25/2001 U.S.A.]

No Doubt and Bounty from Orange County.

Bounty was in Los Angeles this past week, filming scenes for the video to “Hey Baby” - the first single off the new album from No Doubt. Led by Gwen Stefani, who recently hyped up the Eve “Let Me Blow Your Mind” tune and video, No Doubt are a hugely popular pop-rock band from Cali who are heavily inspired and influenced by Reggae and Dancehall, who have also sold some 20 million albums. “I've been listening to this music since puberty,” said Gwen Stefani when we asked her how she whine so?
No Doubt's new album - 'Rocksteady' - is dropping December 18.

The video for “Hey Baby” was shot in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Boyle Heights, the same 'hood where they shot the Crip/Blood movie 'Colors.' Filmed over three days, even though Bounty was only there for one day, the fun-packed clip reflects the band-on-the-road feel of the song, featuring Bounty in scenes at and after Club Poonani. The fact that No Doubt chose their collabo with Bounty Killer as the premier release from the much-anticipated album, at a time when Gwen Stefani is about to be iconized into pop culture for ever, is a great endorsement of not only the creative reaches of Bounty Killer, but of Dancehall on a whole.

Band is absolutely, 100% thrilled with first single choice, "Hey Baby," from the 12-song Rock Steady. The album's artwork had been inspired by the work of artist Steven Sprouse, which in turn inspired the "Hey Baby" video - shot in L.A by director Dave Meyers. The song was recorded and mixed in L.A. and Jamaica.

    Gwen Post-Coming Home!

Hey Guys! Our stay here in London is coming to an end.
I can't decide if I'm happy or sad.
Making this record has been so much fun and we have met some talented friends along the way. I feel excited about the future and having you all hear the record.
We go home to do the video for the first single called "Hey Baby" and we are talking about the concept now.
The artwork has been done for a while and I'm really excited about how it came out.
It was inspired by an artist named Steven Sprouse. We wanted something really graphic. I think it echos the vibe of the music perfectly.
We just got the inside pictures back and we will be shooting the back cover when we get home. We need to decide on the running order and we're done!! I'm looking forward to rehearsing for the U2 tour next week and playing the old and new songs live.
Hope you guy like Rock Steady as much as I do.
    Take care.Love, Gwen

An all-star version of the Marvin Gaye classic "What's Going On" is released to radio and MTV. Recorded over several days in early September in New York, the track features Gwen, Bono, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Wyclef, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Fred Durst, among others. Originally intended for release on December 1, 2001, World AIDS Day, the song was released early to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks. Tom post-Back to Work

We're back in London and mixing the record again. Many of these songs were written and the demos were recorded in my home studio earlier this year back in Los Angeles. Tony and myself took much musical inspiration from contemporary Jamaican dancehall music. On most of the song demos, Tony, myself, and Gwen came up with and played most of the keyboard parts. The great thing is that most of those demo recordings ended up on the actual album tracks. For example, on the song "Hey Baby", there ended up being very few guitar parts but I carry great pride in the keyboard work that I did on the song. Thanks to studio technology advances, we literally recorded much of this new album in our living room for you to listen to in yours. -Tom

We've been in London for 11 days mixing...we should be done mixing by the end of September. ?We moved out of the hotel and into a 5 bedroom house and on the first night one of the toilets exploded and Tony and myself got toilet water all over ourselves!! ?I rented a car, with the steering wheel on the right and ?with a stick on the left, and have almost killed myself numerous times forgetting to stay on the left side of the road, and driving head on into traffic. I'm in desparate need of Mexican food! ?If anyone knows of a good place in London to grab some, please send an email. ?Today we're mixing a song called, "Hella Good"....Got a ticket this morning in front of the house for improperly parking in a "No Parking" zone...all and all things are going fairly smoothly and and the excitement factor's starting to raise as we come closer to finishing this record. ? -Adrian

TONY INTERVIEWED BY BRANDON GRIGGS - September 2001

What made you guys enter the studio so soon?
We were just feeling the vibes. We finished touring in November of last year and we started writing at the beginning of January. The writing process moved quickly and was going so well that we were like ‘lets go into the studio and make this happen.’ As smooth as everything was going, there was really no reason to wait.
What would you say is the most rewarding thing you got from Return Of Saturn?
The best thing for me is that there’s usually not a day that goes by without somebody saying how it is one of their favorite records. Other musicians and artists also compliment us on that record. I think when we made that record we really labored over it and we put a lot into it of which we are really proud. It’s one of the best things we’ve done.
As a band how do you guys feel about Gwen doing stuff with Eve/Moby/etc. do you guys support it?
    Absolutely.
Are you worried that she might do a duet with someone in direct competition with No Doubt?
I think the stuff that she does is just her way of exploring other artistic and creative outlets and directions. Like the stuff she did with Moby and Eve - that’s not stuff that our band does. Also Brian Setzer and Prince- those things are just different and I think it’s awesome for her to get to work with all those people. If she gets those opportunities she should definitely take them and all of us are really, really happy for her and we love it.
What CD’s are in your player right now?
I’ve been listening to the new Travis and Coldplay records. Also, tons of Jamaican music.
You said you go to clubs a lot.Do you have a favorite DJ?
My favorite DJ right now that spins at some of the clubs I go to is named David Orlando…he’s awesome. He spins hip hop/80’s/dancehall and alternative.
What was it like doing the Bathwater video and having choreography?
It’s definitely tongue in cheek - we’re kind of having fun with the dancing rather than doing a whole serious choreography thing. We wanted to go with a cabaret kind of vibe and just have fun with it. We had a really good time making it. And I think that song is one of the few songs on Return of Saturn that’s a little bit happier and had that old school kind of vibe and that’s why we wanted to go with that kind of video. Sophie Muller, who’s done tons of our videos, directed it, and Fatima choreographed it.
Was it hard to do all the dancing?
The thing with videos is that you get to pretend you are an actor for a second and you get to just have fun like we always have fun in our videos there’s no pressure and it was just like lets do some choreographed stuff just to have fun with it and not take ourselves seriously.

We're in the studio finishing up the title track to our forthcoming album "Rock Steady" with producer Nellee Hooper, and mixing of the album is just about to commence any day now. -Tom[posted 8/23/2001 U.S.A.]

It's all in the name... and Rock Steady is it - the new album. "It was an easy decision," Adrian said. "We rock...." Tom interjects, "And we are steady as...." "Seriously," interrupts Tony, "the album has an old-school, early '80s-underground, dance hall-meets-New Wave-pop feel, and for us, 'Rock Steady' captures that universal vibe." Cheers! No Doubt is drinking tea English style while recording the title track to their new album and mixing Rock Steady with Mark "Spike" Stent (Madonna, Bjork, Oasis, Massive Attack). Loving life in London, the band has moved into a five bedroom house, gone to see a few shows, searched high-and-low for decent Mexican food, got a ticket in a car Adrian drives on the wrong side of the road, played many a game of tennis in the rain, and had a toilet explode on Adrian and Tony the first night in their flat.

    Welcome to the new site.
As you can see here, we've been very busy in the studio and within the next few weeks we should actually be finished with the recording phase of our forthcoming CD. We're extremely excited about how all the new songs sound, and can't wait until you get to hear them. There is no firm release date yet, but we'll update you right here as things happen-Tom D

June 2001Back to business. The band is feeling the groove... lots of different grooves. The group heads into the studio first with Nellee Hooper (Madonna, Bjork, etc.), and the then later in the month with Timbalind (Missy Elliott, Aaliyah). Regarding the sound taking shape, Tom said: "This is going to be the most adventurous and eclectic No Doubt album yet. So far it sounds like a heavy synthed-out dub dancehall disco party." In between producers and recording sessions, Gwen performs with Eve at the 1st Annual BET Awards and tapes an episode of Top of the Pops with the rapper.

Yo! What up. We're hangin' at Adrian's Crib outside the L.B. (that's Long Beach) for a taping of MTV Cribs. Also chillin' are the drummer's wife, bandmates, friends at large, and numerous drunken clowns (you should see the raw juggling footage!). Admitting that they have recorded some good and not so good reggae, the excited band members head to Jamaica to record four songs with two legendary drum and bass/dancehall musicians/producers duos: Sly and Robbie (Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, Grace Jones), and Steelie and Cleevie (Yellowman, Shabba Ranks, Sean Paul and Mr. Vegas).

When the material is there, why not?! Feeling good about their initial writing efforts, No Doubt check into a recording studio with hip-hop producers the Neptunes. In late February, the band attends the Grammys in honor of Return of Saturn, which was nominated for Rock Album of the Year. Although they didn't win, it was fun, fun, fun.

When the mood is right, strike. Feeling good about Return, No Doubt cozy up to the writing process. Much time is spent recording demos in Tom's living room (most of which make it to the upcoming album).
